EMFs + Voltage-Gated Calcium Channels

This month, The National Toxicology Program (NTP) of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) announced that they have no plans to further study the health implications of cell phone radio frequency (RF) radiation.

They’ve done $30 million and about 10 years doing animal studies that reported evidence of cancer and DNA damage with exposure to radiofrequency radiation.

Yet they decided to abandon further investigation because “the research was technically challenging and more resource-intensive than expected.”

This is disappointing (to say the least) because we have these government agencies instilled to protect us from the harms of these big industries.

David P. Rall, M.D., Ph.D., Director, 1978–1990:

“NTP exists to develop the information and the tools that both agencies of government and industry need so that we can all live together safely in the same world.”

There is a petition to the United Nations (U.N.), led by the International Electromagnetic Field Alliance, which is over 250 EMF scientists calling for Protection from Non-ionizing Electromagnetic Field Exposure. Each of them has published peer-reviewed research on biological effects of non-ionizing radiation. This was submitted in 2015 and then updated in 2019 and this international appeal is still being updated as more scientists hop on board but no action has been taken.

But the question is what is really happening?

EMFs are invisible, areas of energy. Something we can not see yet they have major effects on our body.

Why is it that when I sleep under my EMF blocking blanket, with my phone away and under an EMF blocking mat, with the house wifi off, and everything in my room unplugged, I sleep noticeably better? Or when I’m working on something with beats headphones it’s harder to get in the zone than with acoustic wired bon charge air tubes. Maybe I’m crazy. But no, there is really something happening worth looking into.

Specifically, nonionizing electromagnetic fields which are  low- to mid-frequency radiation from microwaves, computers, our phones, wifi, MRIs, bluetooth – which are generally viewed as harmless and safer than ionizing radiation.

Dr Martin Pall, a professor emeritus from Washington State University, identified and published research that shows the molecular mechanism on how EMFs work by activating voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs), located on the outer membrane of our cells. 16 17 18 19

Once the voltage-gated calcium channels are activated from low−frequency microwave radiation, the gates are open and an influx of calcium floods into the cell at about 1 million calcium ions per second per channel. We know that when there is an excess of calcium in the cell, we end up with increased levels of two free radicals, nitric oxide (NO) and superoxide.

Nitric oxide is critical to almost every cellular function but when we have excessive amounts of nitric oxide in the cell AND superoxide in the cell, they react and form peroxynitrite – which is an endogenous toxicant. Any cytotoxicity attributed to Nitric oxide is due to this peroxynitrite.

Peroxynitrite acts as an oxidative and nitrative agent, causing extensive cellular damage. It’ll disrupt over 97 critical biological processes, given the chance, by stealing electrons from actors within a process, and/or wrecking havoc on the overall cells’ integrity and function.

It creates high levels of oxidative stress (OS) by producing hydroxyl radical and nitrogen dioxide; and it oxidizes glutathione. Glutathione just so happens to be a defense against peroxynitrite. There is a relationship between glutathione depletion and enhanced peroxynitrite toxicity. Being that our susceptibility to peroxynitrite toxicity can depend on our levels of intracellular glutathione.

Peroxynitrite also creates nitrative stress (NS) by yielding nitrotyrosine and nitrotryptophan (modified amino acids) via peroxynitrite-derived radicals. Once an amino acid is nitrated, as shown below, the structural and functional changes contribute to altering our cells and tissue. Tyrosine is an amino acid made from phenylalanine. It’s used to produce several neurotransmitters, thyroid hormones, and energy production. It goes without saying that this functionality loss is not optimal.

Peroxynitrite can also affect every critical function of the mitochondria once created inside the cell. Ironically, the mitochondria defeats itself, because it produces both nitric oxide and superoxide, fueling the formation of its archenemy peroxynitrite. This guy will then inactivate mitochondrial manganese superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD). This is an essential mitochondrial antioxidant enzyme. Looking deeper into the effects of this you’ll see MnSOD reduced in lots of oxidative stress-related diseases, being that it’s what protects the mitochondria from oxidative stress.

Peroxynitrite also damages complex I in the mitochondria which is vital for oxidative phosphorylation (the main mechanism to generate ATP, or energy). It also damages complexes II, IV and V, the mitochondrial membrane, mitochondrial DNA, it induces mitochondrial swelling, and a conglomerate more mitochondria-targeted issues.

So we see how this can drive chronic diseases. It’s causing mitochondrial dysfunction (MD). We don’t want that bastard in there.

What is the official narrative on EMF dangers?

Generally, when you look up online if EMFs cause damge, they come to conclusions and base their safe limits off of the thermal effects of them. This is not the best way to determine whether or not they’re safe. We know that EMF radiation can trigger a thermal effect, which is how microwaves heat up our food. But when this specific effect is then used to compare other EMF-emitting device risks that have non-thermal levels that don’t heat the body… they’re then deemed safe.

What they are steering us away from is that they activate the volatge-gated calcium channels in our cell membranes, which leads to severe cellular damage from oxidative and nitrative stress, and mitochrondial dysfunction. Thermal effects can’t explain the tyrosine nitration and how it influences the synthesis of dopamine, Alzheimers, Parkinson’s, and so much more. All from that excessive voltage gated calcium channel activity and the cascade of events to follow in certain parts of the brain inducing this damage.

What can we do?

Until safe limits and regulations are ensued on technology, it’s up to use to find modern solutions to these modern problems. One of the brands that I use to lower my EMF exposure is Bon Charge.

Their EMF Radiation Free Air Tube Earphones remove 100% of radio frequency radiation by changing it to acoustic signals. These are the gold standard of wired headphones because most are still using radio frequency, but still those are many times better than bluetooth. AirPods for example, connect with one another with a near field magnetic induction (NFMI) right through your noggin.

Another piece of equipment I have is the EMF Radiation Blocking Laptop Mat which blocks 99% of EMF radiation 0.1Hz to 20GHz from passing underneath the table to my body. Their silver-coated EMF shielding bamboo and cotton blanket is worth the investment as well.

Other things to do include setting up an ethernet instead of wifi in your house. I have the guides to do that on my 21-day holistic habit builder.

The most effective solution is getting outside and grounding whenever and wherever possible.
